Windward: Outsmart the Weather in a Race Around the World

About the Windward Project

Windward: Outsmart the Weather in a Race Around the World is the third in a series of award-winning, interactive broadband learning demonstrations by Cable in the Classroom, the cable industry's education foundation.

The first (released in 2003), Shakespeare: Subject to Change, was designed to allow learners to explore how William Shakespeare's texts have come to be-from the printing process to how the works are performed on screen.

The second (released in 2004), eLECTIONS: Your Adventure in Politics, was designed to teach learners about the electoral process through a simulated run for the presidency.

This third demonstration is intended to teach learners basic weather concepts and real-world science skills such as data analysis through a realistic, ever changing battle against the elements.

Each of our broadband demonstrations was designed to support meaningful, memorable learning in class and at home, by students, teachers, and family members alike. A few principles guide their development:

  • assemble unique resources and expertise from partnerships formed with leading cable networks, public institutions, and non-profit partners;
  • incorporate a range of multi-sensory content-video clips, music, text, and excellent graphics;
  • incorporate primary source material; and
  • allow the learner to interact with the content in meaningful ways-in different directions or sequences, at any pace.

By varying the content of our demonstrations and holding constant our development principles, we believe these broadband learning demonstrations serve to illustrate some of the many possibilities for moving beyond traditional print instructional materials.

Cable in the Classroom will continue to explore the electronic learning frontier, seek ways to demonstrate how cable content and technology can be of service to education, and share lessons learned. Our series of broadband learning demonstrations is designed to do just that-and from where we sit, the future looks bright indeed.

Accessibility

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act 1998 requires that federal agencies ensure that all of their electronic and information technology is usable by individuals with disabilities. For websites, this means that users with disabilities are able to obtain and use information provided on the website. Windward was developed in partnership with NASA, which contributed in-kind support in the form of advice and expertise in its development.

In accordance with Section 508, Cable in the Classroom designed Windward to make it accessible to the widest possible audience. For instance, Windward includes many features to increase the accessibility of the site to individuals with disabilities, including functionality to support screen readers, alternative text formats, and captioning of embedded video.
