NEW HAMPSHIRE SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS
COMPETENCY-BASED PERFORMANCE STANDARD FOR SOCIAL STUDIES
According to the NH Curriculum Frameworks, proficiency in Social Studies means that the student will develop knowledge, skills, and motivation to become a responsible citizen.
Performance Standard: The student will demonstrate the ability to:
Grade 9:
- Use Social Studies concepts and knowledge to guide inquiry into political, geographic, economic, or social issues at the global, national, state, or local levels
- Identify, evaluate, and use a variety of informational and statistical sources
- Identify and effectively organize the information needed to answer or explore questions about Social Studies issues
- Demonstrate knowledge of democratic practices
Grade 10 (in addition to above):
- Use knowledge of historical events to show relationships with present or future events/conditions
- Analyze and evaluate information sources to identify diverse interpretations of events
- Recognize and demonstrate an understanding of individual differences and conflicting points of view
- Develop, support, present and defend his/her own ideas appropriately in a public forum
Grade 11 & 12 (in addition to above):
- Describe relationships between Western and global economic, social, cultural or political traditions and present US and global development
- Identify and describe problems within, and possible solutions to, specific political, geographic, cultural, and social issues
- Analyze the pros and cons of options available for resolution of specific Social Studies issues
- Participate in a meaningful, constructive civic action that illustrates responsibility as a citizen in a participatory democracy
